The weekend in Pernes les Fontaines

The Saturday market in Pernes les Fontaines is always my favorite because it is small and yet very well set up and attended. Although it is still winter market time there is a good variety in the stalls. This Saturday the sun was out, the sky blue and there was no Mistral (yippee) and since Pernes is such a charming little town it was a pleasure to stroll the market and just look at stalls and people. I was well layered with my new wool undershirt and scarf and beret and the sun was actually feeling warm.

This is a map of the various biking trails around Mont Ventoux, which has snow on it right now but is coveted by bike riders in France and all over the world I am pretty sure.

Our favorite fruit and vegetable vendor was there in the usual spot.
We bought a variety of goodies here but the highlight was the first strawberries from Andalusia which were as juicy and sweet as they look in the photo!

Carpentras has a festival of the strawberry but not until April so these berries were a real treat. Pernes is sister city to Sevilla I think and they have many exchanges for flamenco dancing and even a running of bulls from Camargue in late June early July. It is quite an event!

I looked around the market and liked this sign...

which means "essential things in my basket...flavors of the past." Many people order online from the grower and get their wares delivered especially in the winter when it can be so windy outside at the market. Emmanuelle likes to order groceries online and drives to a pick up spot where they put the bags into her car and the errands are done! It beats waiting in line to pay.

We walked around town a bit and over to the tourist office which is located next to the market.

They hold a regular "art walk" type of event in Pernes with all the artists of Pernes and in the tourist office there was an exhibit in the gallery of the many Pernois artisans...

...and other talents too

Every street in this town is very pretty and I am looking forward to some more exploration once the weather becomes more stable.

On Sunday it rained like crazy so it was a day to stay inside. On TV they were doing a report on the agricultural show in Paris. This reporter was talking about the various events and if you look behind her to the left of her shoulder you can see a giant pig who put his front feet on the rail to look at all the people. He stood there like a greeter and passersby were patting him on the head and taking pictures!

JC and Anton took Maya over to an indoor rock wall to climb and Emmanuelle and I did some sewing.

On Friday Maya had a goûter  for a few of her girlfriends. We had chocolate cake, made bead necklaces with our names (I did Coco)

and the girls dressed up in a variety of costumes.

What a group!
