Nice on Saturday

Saturday in Nice was quite sunny and even pretty warm although we had to be careful because every once in a while there was a chilly breeze coming by. We walked along the Ave. Jean Medecin which is where all the stores are located and it is a walkers street. The streetcar runs along this street and we saw mounted police and also police on bicycles along with lots of shoppers and walkers. Notice the name of the streetcar line: "Lignes d'Azur"!

At the end of the avenue is Place Massena

which has  fountains like the fountain on the Willamette in Portland...(here you can see a reflection of Vieux Nice in the back)

and gardens the whole length with a playground that has play structures carved from olive wood...swings, slides, climbing structures etc.

Across from the park is the Lycée Massena where JC went to school. I think this would be a fantastic place to study or teach...can you see the mosaic tiles on the building?

We went down a few steps into Vieux Nice...(old town) which has a decidedly Italian air about it since Nice once was an Italian city.

I just love the narrow streets and the colors of the buildings here.

There are many open squares in Vieux Nice and at the market area there was the Socca stand which is a very Niçois treat...

...sort of a pancake made of garbanzo bean batter and really delicious. JC stood in line and we shared a few bites of this yummy snack.

Here are some other views of the neighborhood.

This building is the Prefecture de Police and the top floor holds the magnificent apartments of the chief of police!!! What do you think? Looks pretty great to me with a view of Vieux Nice off the balcony!

This bouquet came by me at the market...lilacs were just out and we could smell the perfume all over the place!

Speaking of perfume...this fountain near the Place Massena actually has perfume in the mist!!! Only in France right??!!

We headed back to cousin Patricia's and past this building. I like the contrast of Foot Locker and...the architecture!!

More next time and in the meantime...today is Kaia's birthday. Happy Birthday!

  1. So cool to see JC in front of his school and imagine him as a school boy...not hard to do in those shorts he has on! Very nice shots of the city...I want the police chief's apartment...no wonder the peasants revolted...
